Room 504, Tuesday Evening

So it was possible that Wesley's room was a tad bit untidy today and this was apparently a theme today, but this time it wasn't Alex's fault. Or at least, not entirely. Today's mess had something to do with the fact that Wesley was sitting on the floor, with papers strewn everywhere as he researched... a hotel.

Yes, he felt a bit silly about it himself, but it was what Angel had asked him to work on. So.

"A two hundred and forty-year old vampire with a soul with an interest in real estate," he murmured to himself, poring over an ownership deed that Cordelia had faxed over after being unable to make heads or tails of it. "Honestly."

There was a knock at the door. If Wesley knew what was good for him, he wouldn't answer it, but...

"Come in," Wesley called absently, frowning at a newspaper article from the fifties that was proving enormously unhelpful.

"Hello, Wesley," Loki said brightly, pushing open the door and placing a box down on Alex's bed.

Not ominous at all.

Wesley squinted at the article for another moment before realizing whose voice that was. Right, that merited a glance up.

"Er," he said. "Hello." Damn you, stupid promise to Tara to be nice. "Ah..." He nodded in the direction of the box Loki had just put down on the bed, hoping to imply the question without having to actually ask.

"It is a gift for Alex so that he bears me no ill will," Loki replied. Yeah. That was likely.

Damn you, wry English skepticism. THIS WAS NOT THE ATTITUDE THAT TARA HAD REQUESTED, WESLEY.

"You do not believe me?" Look at that hurt expression, Wesley! LOOK AT IT.

Wesley cleared his throat and glanced away, doing his best not to get sucked in.

Finally he sighed, looked back at the box, and softened somewhat. "And you're certain it won't explode?"

"Very well, then," Wesley relented. "I... apologize for doubting you."

WESLEY, NO. THIS WAS A MISTAKE.

"You may see it if you doubt my word further," Loki replied, plucking the box back up to show it was something called a Chia Pet. Though, this one had been carefully altered as though to look like someone Wesley had little chance of knowing. "It was suggested that perhaps he needed a hobby to occupy his time."

"Well... I can see him, ah, appreciating that," Wesley granted slowly. "How very thoughtful of you."

He was still wary, but willing to give Loki the benefit of the doubt here. Because he was an idiot.

"I am certain he will enjoy it as much as the commercials have implied."

Tara tapped on the doorframe. "Hey, Wes," she said, leaning her head in. "Are you in the middle of anything?"

Well, there was that small mountain of dreadfully-organized paperwork?

"Nothing pressing," he said, all too grateful for the opportunity to set some of this aside. "Did you need something?"

"Nah," Tara said, and gave a slightly anxious look to that mountain of paperwork. "I mean, I tried a sell with Loki Sunday."

A pause. "It ... did nothing. Which, um, I don't think I screwed up?"

"Oh?" Wesley said, reaching for the glasses he'd taken off and set on the bed. Suddenly that skepticism for Loki was back in something close to full force. Placing his glasses back on, he offered, "Oh, and you're welcome to have a seat, er... anywhere."

There was probably room somewhere! Good luck finding it, though, Tara.

"What sort of spell was it?"

"Thanks," Tara said, and picked her way through the room to a desk chair that she hoped was Wes's. "It was supposed to be teleportation spell? Not ... like I said, we didn't get anywhere."

"Also, did you know his bird talks?"

"No," Wesley said, reaching for a spare piece of paper to jot that down. "Does it? That's..." He thought about saying 'disconcerting,' then amended it to something a bit more neutral. "Unusual."

No shit, Wes.

"Do you know anything about what his intentions were?"

"The bird's or Loki's?" Tara asked. "The bird seemed to just want to, um, k-kind of rag on Loki."

She didn't think that was what Wes meant, but it was by far the easier question to answer.

"No, no, Loki's," Wesley clarified quickly, though that was getting jotted down too, yep. "With the, ah. Spell."

Tara thought about it for a minute, restlessly twirling a piece of hair.

"I think he just wanted to see if we could," she decided. "I mean, it was a real spellbook, the spell was pretty basic for what we were trying to do."

Except for the not working.

"Could show you if you wanted."

"If you wouldn't mind?" Wesley asked hopefully. Because that was how to fix it.

"Sure," Tara said, then realized something. "Um. Except for where I didn't bring the book."

Because she was the brilliantest witch ever, yup.

"Do you have Asherman's Daemonology? It was a weird translation but I'm pretty sure that's wh-what Loki was using."

"I believe so," Wesley said thoughtfully, cautiously making his way around some papers to get to his bookshelf. He thumbed through books, finally resurfacing with one, which he handed to Tara. "I have the original Latin..."
