After a relatively busy few weeks -- some of Gunn's old friends went a bit mad and nearly blew up Caritas; Angel temporarily switched bodies with an old man; Fred became increasingly willing to leave her room -- an evening finally came when the entire Angel Investigations team was able to just sit down and have a relatively peaceful dinner in the hotel lobby like normal people.

Angel | "So then," Angel said, in between sips of pig's blood from a mug of Cordelia's with 'DIVA' emblazoned in glittery letters on the side, "the moron goes ahead and punches a hole in the shop window, yanks the necklace his girlfriend was eyeing out of the display case, and brought the attention of a whole crew of French police and vampire hunters down on the four of us." |
Cordelia | Cordy whistled. "Bet Darla was pissed," she commented. |
Angel | Angel made an amused noise at that. "No, Darla was happy to get on the horse with Elizabeth and head for our ship," he corrected her. "I would've gone too, but James was doing his whole bravado thing, and..." |
Gunn | "And Angelus wasn't about to pass up a good fight," Gunn filled in. |
Angel | Angel shrugged. "That might have been a factor." So... yes. "So I tell James he's an idiot, we take out a few of the police, but then we see who we're actually dealing with, and it's not exactly great news." He paused, this time for a somewhat dramatic sip of blood. |
Fred | "Well?" Fred piped up. "Who was it?" |
Angel | Angel set his mug back down. "Daniel Holtz," he said carefully, turning to look at Wesley. |
Cordelia | Cordelia took a moment to run the name over in her head, but yeah, nothing. "Who?" |
Wesley | "Daniel Holtz," Wesley repeated before Angel could get a chance to. "The most famous vampire hunter of the eighteenth century. English -- he must have followed Angelus and Darla to Marseilles on this particular occasion." He glanced at Angel, got a nod, and continued. "The Council's records always suggested that he is the most successful rogue vampire hunter in history to date -- more than three hundred kills to his name. Angelus and Darla were perhaps the ones he most would have liked to kill, however." He shot Angel a somewhat apologetic look at that. |
Angel | "Just about," Angel agreed, a little wearily. "Now, if James hadn't burned down the Count de Leon's villa, he wouldn't have been able to find us -- but I digress." Because he was the bad guy in this story, mind. "So, he finds us, he attacks, we're all shot with arrows, James and I just manage to escape on horseback, and then--" Oh. Look at that, there was someone in the hotel. |
Lilah | Well, if the smell of expensive Chanel perfume hadn't given it away, the clickety-clack of even more expensive shoes was probably a decent indicator. "Look at that, the gang's all here," Lilah said, approaching the front desk where everyone had congregated to eat. |
Angel | Wesley was about to speak, but Angel -- forgetting, not for the first time, the new chain of command here -- was quicker. "What do you want, Lilah?" She'd interrupted story time. |
Lilah | "Relax, don't go all hostile on me," Lilah said boredly, reaching for a thick stack of papers from her purse. "I'm here to do you a favor." |
Cordelia | Cordy's jaw had been set from the moment she saw Lilah enter the hotel -- probably something to do with the events of two weeks ago where Lilah had contributed to engineering her torment through excruciatingly powerful and physically-manifested visions -- so it was no surprise when she fixed Lilah with a very unamused look and said, "Why is it that I have a hard time believing that?" |
Lilah | Lilah didn't see fit to dignify that with a response. She tossed the stack of papers in front of Wesley, apparently sensing that he was the only one likely to take her somewhat seriously. "It's all here," she said. "Earthquake safe certification, statement of asbestos level compliance... all of it." |
Wesley | As she'd suspected, Wesley was taking this seriously -- enough to rifle through the papers she'd tossed at him, which no one else seemed to have an interest in doing. "Mmm," he murmured to himself, not finding anything overtly odd about what he was seeing -- except, of course, for the fact that it was Lilah who'd given it to them. |
Lilah | "I'm not playing you here," Lilah continued, sounding... almost offended that no one had thanked her for this yet. "This is just internal politics against Gavin. You're just... the lucky recipients." And when no one else seemed to have anything else to say to that, with the exception of Cordelia's continuous hard gaze, she let out an exasperated "You're welcome," turned on her heel and walked out. |
Gunn | Only once the door had shut behind Lilah did Gunn look up from his food for long enough to comment. "Anyone else find that creepy and weird?" he inquired. |
Wesley | "Certainly so," Wesley said quietly, finally setting the papers back down. "But that doesn't mean it's not legitimate. I'll go over these in more detail later this evening, but for now I think it's safe to say that--" He was interrupted by the shrill ringing of the company phone. |
Cordelia | "Ugh, what now?" Cordy grumbled, reaching for it. Around a mouthful of food, she greeted the caller, "Angel Investiga--" As the person on the other end of the line interrupted her, Cordy's eyes got wider and she swallowed her food. "That's amazing," she said at last, sounding much more sincere than if she'd just been applauding a client on a successful year free of demon possessions or something. "You're awesome, Will. I'll tell him. Thanks for letting me know." And then she hung up the phone, fixed Angel with a big smile, and said, "Guess who's alive and in Sunnydale?" |
Angel | Angel let out a breath of -- maybe not relief, and certainly not necessity (vampire, remember), but it was definitely something good. "Buffy," he said, and within an instant he seized his car keys off the desk and hurried out of the hotel. |
Wesley | That... was wonderful, really, even if Wesley had certainly had his suspicions of something like this unfolding -- he'd heard enough about Buffy a few years from now from Kennedy, after all -- but what he was fixating on here was the other part. "Willow did this?" he inquired. "With magics? Is that entirely--" |
Fred | "Guys?" Fred interrupted, very timidly. "Who's Buffy?" |
